ASJA Conference: Video for Writers

As a long time member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, (ASJA), I have always wanted to see my book on the sales table at the National Conference. A few months ago I started working with author Len Bracken, on video components to go with his series of novels. This collaboration led to me to consider doing a workshop for ASJA that would explore how writers can use video in their own careers as a sales tool for books or an additional revenue stream.

I pitched the idea to ASJA and they liked it which led me to develop a 90 minute hands-on presentation. The first half is presented via PowerPoint, and offers a “wide shot” of Preproduction, Production, and Post Production skills and techniques. In the second half of the presentation I used two different types of cameras, an iPhone and a semi-pro video camera to shoot footage in the workshop and show the participants how to import the footage into a laptop and edit it using Final Cut Pro X.

If you are an author or business owner interested in using video as a sales tool or an outreach effort, I can train your staff in basic production techniques or help you produce your own videos. The price of video production has fallen significantly over the past few years and the advent of social media provides multiple and free distribution channels for anything you produce. Let me know if you have questions or need a quote - advice is always free and worth every penny!

Turns out a blogger writing for ProfNet was in the audience and provided coverage of what I was talking about take a look at what she has to say.
